It's not going to be a few months before the extended blu ray versions are released, try a few years. Supposedly the extended versions are not going to be released until the new Hobbit movie makes it's debut in 2012. It makes sense from a marketing standpoint, double dip and release the extended version when the fans are pumped about the upcoming Hobbit movie. So the question you need to ask yourself, are you willing to wait two years for the extended version of Lord of The Rings on blu ray? Lastly, those of you crying foul over New Line's "double dipping" by releasing the theatrical versions and then the extended version....last time I looked New Line was a FOR profit entity. Of course they are going to try and make as much money as possible! If you don't want to pay for both the theatrical and extended version, I respect that. But don't act surprise that New Line is going to milk it's most successful movie franchise for every last dollar possible. New Line is just following the "George Lucas" initiative. Lastly, while a number of us only want to see the extended versions a number of the more "casual" LOTR fans may be content with the theatrical version. Obviously there is a market for both fan bases, and New Line knows this. I'm not sure if I will buy the theatrical versions, I would rather have the extended. Oh well, I guess all the die hard fans are going to have to be patient
