Wanted

O.K. I'll be honest, Wanted didn't look that interesting to me. I thought it was gonna turn out to be a typical, predictable and dull action blockbuster film but I must admit I was completely wrong. There has been alot of terrible blockbuster films lately coming out of Hollywood, this was definitely not the case with Wanted. I heard about this film during last summer from my wife who praised it and said it was an awesome film, but I wasn't exactly in the mood to go watch the latest snoozefest from Angelina Jolie so I diced to skip it. Of course I was wrong and finally decide to check it out and it turned out great, now the film was loosely based on a comic so it definitely lacks some realism and is not to be taken too seriously. The film has some highly spectacular and over the top action scenes that looked brilliant and I was totally amazed by this, Wanted is Russian director Timur Bekmambetov's first foray into the English language Hollywood big-budgeted blockbuster and if you're looking for an exciting no-brainer summer popcorn movie, then Wanted would be right up your alley. Yeah the plot wasn't exactly clever but it still was a great and entertaining action flick. James McAovy was really good as the lead character and fit his role perfectly as an average guy (loser) who all of a sudden turns into a lethal assassin. The Character starts learning how to curve bullets and generally defy every other law of physics in Wanted, an over the top but highly entertaining action film from Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov. McAvoy stars as Wesley Gibson, an unhappy, over-medicated account manager who hates his boss, has a girlfriend who's cheating on him with his best friend and he has no hope of abandoning his mindless daily routine. That is until he finds himself the main target in the middle of a shootout between Cross (Thomas Kretschmann) and Fox (Angelina Jolie). After a storm of bullets and an intense car chase, Fox and Wesley escape to the castle lair of The Fraternity which is a group of assassins that have maintained order in the world for a thousand years by decoding binary code from the imperfections woven by a giant loom, all of which recently have been decoded by the group's leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman). The group informs Wesley that Cross has recently killed his father, and that he must now be trained to exact revenge on Cross. Jolie plays a no nonsense version of her killer assassin from Mr. and Mrs. Smith. While the trailers (and honestly, the plot itself) had heavy Matrix influences, this film takes bullet time and ups the gore factor, with bullets whizzing through brains in slow motion, then making the trip back to see where they came from. Even the themes of conformity and complacency of The Matrix are here, but again amped up to the nth degree. Let me just say something here: I don't think Wanted was trying to be a serious movie and I certainly don't think it's revolutionary filmmaking. But for a little less than two hours, Wanted ignores pretension, rules of order and decency and delivers ridiculous, balls to the wall action sequences that never bores the audience. Wanted is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and this Blu-ray disc looks fantastic. It's a nice and clean presentation, free of grain and artifacts and the colors are nicely balanced. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is like the film, very loud and aggressive and creates an impressive sound field. The music was great and it really complements the action sequences, this disc also includes several features focusing on all aspects of the production such as the actors and their characters, the special bullet effects, the death defying subway sequences, the adaptation of the graphic novel to film and a profile of Bekmambetov. There's also a "motion comic" where comic panels are animated, a music video of "The Little Things" by Danny Elfman set to scenes from the film, the making of Wanted: The Game and an extended scene of Wesley shooting at corpses. If you're a fan of over the top action flicks that play to their target audience with no apologies, then Wanted is for you. Thanks to Bekmambetov's skilled directing and a stellar cast lead confidently by McAvoy, Wanted avoids being a carbon copy of the films that inspired it and stands out as a fresh entry into the action genre. Make sure that you don't miss out on this fantastic film, I highly recommend this 4.5 out of 5 stars.
